‘Thought for Food’ Cooking Group The Cooking Group is a group of people with different nationalities and age groups with the main objective of learning different cuisines from different countries and, at the same time enjoying, ourselves. Throughout the year the group aimed to cook something new each week. Oftentimes, a member shares, with other members, the process of how to cook their country’s own specialties, which everybody in the group enjoys very much. For each of us it was not only learning different techniques in cooking, but also getting together and having some fun, that makes the group so enjoyable. A member once said that joining the group was like a stress buster for him. It was his way of easing the hard work he had done for the week. Other members see it as their opportunity for interacting with others and getting to know people from different backgrounds. For Alex, a member who is also a participant in the Fawkner Community House English course, being with the group helps him to practice communicating using the English language. Over the year the group learned a lot of recipes which they usually go home and cook for their families. Each member gained new skills in cooking, not through expensive cooking lessons, but by contributing a small amount of money each week. The group is grateful to Meredith Lawrence, the Fawkner House Co-ordinator, for her untiring support. For us, the House is like a second home, a place where we feel we belong. Moreover, Moreland City Council’s support for the cooking group for the year is fully appreciated by each member. Through the grant, the group was able to buy much needed materials and equipment. However, all the members of the group were so sad when we were informed that our request for the grant for next year was unsuccessful. We fully know that each of us cannot afford to contribute more than what we are contributing at present each week. With a great belief in Fawkner Community House management and local government giving grants, all members positively believe that cooking group will go on.
